APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A group of volunteers in the Appleton area continue to make a difference in their community, one project at a time.
The Rotary Club of Appleton, also known as the Appleton Breakfast Rotary Club, spent Friday doing some remodeling work at Fox Valley Literacy.
“The Literacy Council desperately needed to make a classroom bigger for increasingly larger classes that they’re offering, so we were able to say, ‘We can do that with a few hands’ and we’ve been here all day doing the teardown and now some of the painting and reconstruction,” explained Bill Kessenich.
Kessenich is a member of the Appleton Breakfast Rotary Club. It’s one of four Rotary clubs in the Fox Valley and among more than 46,000 clubs worldwide. He said the Appleton club is always looking for service opportunities within their community.
“Each of the clubs does service work within the community, collects dollars to give to charity and to help support non-profits, and also to do international work for peace, justice, environmental work, women’s health issues and worldwide health,” Kessenich said.
Eight Rotarians were scheduled to help remodel Fox Valley Literacy’s classroom. Kessenich said the majority of the work was to be done Friday, and the club hopes to put the finishing touches on the job next Friday.
Along with the free labor, the club also donated over $200 worth of materials for the project.
“We would always welcome new members — men, women, young, old. If you’re interested in serving the community, Rotary is a great way to commit to that,” Kessenich said.
If you’re interested in learning more or being a member, the Appleton Breakfast Rotary Club meets for breakfast Thursdays at 7 a.m. at the Hilton Inn in Kimberly, right off of College Avenue.
