NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Students in Neenah got cereal-ously creative for a charity challenge Wednesday.
Horace Mann Elementary School is taking part in the Do Good Wisconsin Cereal Box Challenge, sponsored by its Student Council.
As part of the challenge, schools of similar sizes across the state compete against one another to collect the most cereal boxes to donate to local food pantries. With those cereal boxes, students attempt to make the most creative domino video.
Collection began in mid-February and ended Tuesday. Horace Mann successfully surpassed its goal of 500 cereal boxes, collecting a total of 542 to give to food pantries in the Fox Valley.
“A lot of the work we’ve done so far this year with our Student Council is how can we give back to the community,” said Elizabeth Merrill, a literacy coach and co-advisor of Student Council. “Ways we can do that is showing kindness, it’s by giving to those that are in need, it’s by being brave and really showing that you can be a good person and do good things for other people.”
“And being empathetic towards others, we’re teaching them that too,” added Alisha Hedrich, a third grade teacher and fellow co-advisor.
Merrill and Hedrich said it took about an hour and a half to set up the cereal boxes for their domino video. The whole school gathered to watch and cheer as the boxes tumbled to the floor.
Students were involved in every aspect of the challenge, including making promotional videos eliciting donations from parents in the Neenah Joint School District. Community members donated as well.
As the prize for reaching their collection goal, students get to “sundae” their principal and a few teachers at an assembly using whipped cream, chocolate, caramel and sprinkles.
