GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Area Public School District’s Board of Education named Vicki Bayer interim superintendent during a special meeting Monday night.
That decision came after the board was in closed session for roughly two hours. This marks Bayer’s second time serving in the interim superintendent role.
“I am grateful that the Board of Education believes in me and my ability to continue to lead the district through difficult times,” said Bayer in an interview following the meeting.
The move comes after former superintendent Dr. Claude Tiller, Jr. resigned last month. His departure came after controversial comments he made during an Atlanta-based radio program.
With Tiller’s departure, the school district has now had four superintendents since 2020, including when Bayer was the interim from 2022 to 2023.
Michelle Langenfeld was superintendent from 2011 to 2020. Stephen Murley served in the role from 2020 to 2022.
Community members have voiced their frustrations with the situation surrounding Tiller, but the district said it’s focused on bettering its students.
“I think we’ve recognized a gap that we’d had prior to Dr. Tiller joining us and we want to make sure that we continue that good work that he’s been able to bridge for us,” said Bayer.
The Board of Education is also beginning its search for a new board member. This comes after Laura Laitinen-Warren resigned more than one week ago.
“I’ve been through this process a couple times and so I know that it’s a little stressful but it’s necessary. We need seven, not six (board members),” said Board President Laura McCoy.
The window to apply for a board position opens today (Tuesday).
