OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A task force Gov. Tony Evers established to address artificial intelligence’s impact on Wisconsin’s workforce convened Monday in Oshkosh.
It marks the fourth gathering hosted on a statewide tour by the Governor’s Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence. The task force is exploring policies, partnerships, investments and educational initiatives related to workforce development “to continue Wisconsin’s economic momentum and capitalize on the AI transformation.”
Among the meeting’s featured speakers Monday were Anupam Khare, senior vice president and chief information officer of Oshkosh Corp., and Amanda Ballantyne, executive director of the AFL-CIO Technology Institute. Task force subcommittees also offered presentations.
Amy Pechachek, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, explained the reasoning behind the task force’s decision to gather in Oshkosh.
“Oshkosh, in particular, is one of our state’s leaders in terms of using this technology to really benefit their operations and still keep a human-centered approach to their work product, so it’s a fascinating presentation we got from their chief technology officer and we’re very excited about some of the great work they’re doing here in Oshkosh,” Pechachek said.
Pechachek said Gov. Evers and his administration are dedicated to ensuring local businesses and workers are involved in the conversations surrounding technological advancements like artificial intelligence.
Right now, we are in the middle of what is being deemed the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ so AI is projected to impact virtually every occupation, every industry… Our goal here in the Task Force is to make sure that we are bringing everyone along as our economy changes, as our communities change and as our work changes for everyone. There is a seat at the table for everybody… We want to make sure no one is left behind.
Task force members include state and national representatives from the public and private sectors, including Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach and NEW Manufacturing Alliance Executive Director Ann Franz.
Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos also created an AI task force in the Legislature. It is chaired by Rep. Nate Gustafson, a Republican from Fox Crossing.
