Assistant professor of philosophy at St. Norbert College, Ben Chan, appears on Jeopardy! PC: Fox 11 Online
DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) — A St. Norbert College professor and nine-time Jeopardy champion is competing in the game show’s most prestigious contest.
Ben Chan is returning for the Tournament of Champions on Tuesday night. The local celebrity gave some insight into getting ready for the show.
“I try to enjoy the preparation, and then once I got there, I try to trust my preparation and have fun because you never know how long or short it may last,” said Chan. “That’s the one way to know you’ll have no regrets.”
Chan says the Tournament of Champions felt a little different from his previous Jeopardy experience.
“The players at this level were very closely matched, so a lot turns on who can find those daily doubles in the second round,” said Chan.
Chan won over $250,000 during his nine-game streak last spring, which ended on May 23, 2023.
The clue, under the category, “Shakespeare’s Characters,” read: “Both of the names of these 2 lovers in a Shakespeare play come from Latin words for ‘blessed.'” The answer was Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing. Chan’s answer, which ended his run, was “Beatrice and Benedict.”
“I’ve been trying to be better about is taking my time. Sometimes I rush through things and make little mistakes,” said Chan. “So even when practicing I’m trying to take my time and read over the materials more slowly.”
Viewers on Tuesday night might even spot a Green Bay ‘Easter egg’ on Chan’s outfit; a Zippin Pippin lapel pin. If Chan advances, the best-of-seven finals starts March 12.
Jeopardy airs at 6 p.m. on FOX 11.
