Dr. Claude Tiller Jr.
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Despite members of the community rallying for Dr. Claude Tiller, Jr. to be reinstated as superintendent of the Green Bay Area Public School District, the Board of Education has shut down that possibility.
In a statement, the Board said the “window to have this conversation has closed” and the district is “moving forward” with the process of finding a new leader.
On February 17, 2024, the Board of Education voted in open session to unanimously accept the terms of resignation proposed by Dr. Claude Tiller, Jr. Under the terms of the separation agreement, he was provided the opportunity to change his mind and rescind his resignation. He did not do so. The window to have this conversation has closed and there are no further comments to make. We are now moving forward with discussing the process for identifying and selecting the district’s next superintendent.
There is much work to be done in our district and we will engage with those who raised concerns regarding equity and equality and the need for greater understanding and inclusion among all stakeholders. We all have a common goal and mission and that is to educate all students to be college, career and community ready, inspired to succeed in our diverse world.
It’s been nearly two weeks since Tiller announced his resignation as superintendent of the Green Bay Area Public School District on Feb. 17.
On Tuesday, details of Tiller’s separation agreement with the district were released.
Later that afternoon, Tiller released a statement, in which he said he was open to returning as superintendent. Tiller wrote, in part:
Although out of my control, I want to provide an answer to the pressing question so many continue to ask, by publicly expressing my willingness to engage in conversations regarding the possibility of my return.
Tiller had until Sunday, Feb. 25 to rescind his resignation. On Wednesday, a representative for Tiller said part of his reasoning for not doing so was due to the speed of his resignation process.
Tiller’s spokesperson also wrote that the ex-superintendent was so “deeply moved” by the numerous calls from the Green Bay community during a school board meeting on Monday, Feb. 26 for Tiller to be reinstated, that he felt compelled to release his statement to the public on Tuesday.
Tiller’s attorney has reached out to the legal counsel for the GBAPS Board of Education last Friday and expressed Tiller’s willingness to return to his position as superintendent.
According to his representative, Tiller has not spoken face-to-face with board members since being placed on administrative leave on Feb. 13.
Tiller’s resignation came following comments he made on an Atlanta radio program earlier this month.
As many in the community have been critical of the Board of Education, Tiller says he has respect and appreciation for the board members. In Tuesday’s statement, Tiller wrote:
As they navigate the complex issues facing public education, we must also continue to acknowledge the vital role they each play in the education of our children.
On Wednesday, Tiller’s spokesman wrote that Tiller “believes strongly in the leadership of the Board, and has faith in the strong relationships he has with each member.”
