MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Governor Scott Walker’s office says he will work with lawmakers to make changes to a controversial budget amendment.
Members of both parties and the public were speaking out Friday against the amendment which would limit access to public records.
The Joint Finance Committee added it to the state budget bill which was passed.
The amendment would give Wisconsin lawmakers the right to refuse to disclose communications by their offices and the drafts of bills.
Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel said transparency is the cornerstone of democracy. Schimel said the provisions limiting access to public records “move Wisconsin in the wrong direction.”
Republicans aren’t saying which of the 12 members of their party backed the new limitations. They do say the governor signed off on them, but Walker’s office says he will work to reverse those same limitations.
