WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Investigators have released the names of the officer and suspect involved in a fatal shooting in Winnebago County earlier this month.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation said North Fond du Lac Police Department Sergeant Bryce LaLuzerne initiated a traffic stop Feb. 2 in the Village of North Fond du Lac, which led to a pursuit.
A deputy with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office later deployed a tire deflation device on Interstate 41 near County Hwy Z about one-half mile into Winnebago County to force the vehicle to stop.
The vehicle’s driver and lone occupant, who has now been identified as 36-year-old Lawrence M. Drennan, called 911 and reported he had a gun.
“Drennan exited the vehicle and approached law enforcement. Sergeant LaLuzerne discharged his firearm, striking Drennan. Life saving measures were performed but Drennan died from his injuries on the scene,” a news release from the DOJ states.
No members of law enforcement were injured during the incident.
DCI is leading the investigation of the officer involved critical incident with assistance from Wisconsin State Patrol, Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, DCI Crime Response Specialists, and members of DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.
DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Winnebago County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
LaLuzerne, who has five years of police experience, remains on administrative duty, per department policy. He was wearing a body camera during the incident. Additionally, both the NFDLPD and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office have squad cameras.
