Gene Meyer (OCSO)
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Gene Meyer is mentally competent to stand trial for the 1988 murder of Betty Rolf, a judge ruled.
Meyer, 68, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the death of Rolf. Rolf’s body was found Nov. 7, 1988, in Grand Chute, just outside the Appleton city limits. Meyer was charged in December 2022 after DNA from the scene matched evidence taken from Meyer’s truck.
The next motions hearing in the case is March 7. Trial is scheduled to start April 1.
Competency refers to a defendant’s ability to understand court proceedings and assist in their own defense. It does not address his mental state at the time of the crime. After a psychiatric review, Judge Mark Schroeder ruled Meyer competent at a hearing Friday, court records show.
