PC: Winnebago County Sheriff's Office
TOWN OF OMRO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The body of a kayaker who had been missing for more than two months was found Monday.
Winnebago County sheriff’s officials said they were called to Lake Butte des Morts just after 1:15 p.m. when people out spearfishing reported finding a body in the middle of the lake.
Investigators identified the body as that of Michael Iriarte, 41. He was reported missing Nov. 26 after he did not return from a fishing trip. His kayak was found the next day.
Sheriff’s officials also warn that emergency crews used the Leonard Point Boat Landing to access the lake and recover Iriarte’s body. Because of those efforts, the integrity of the ice in the area degraded drastically. Those planning to go ice fishing or sturgeon spearing in the area should be careful.
