MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Thanks to the generosity of the community, a box truck operating for a Manitowoc nonprofit is now back up and running.
Last December, thieves targeted Ascend and cut the catalytic convertor off their main production box truck.
Ascend brings work to people with disabilities and the box truck is an essential component to that program.
While Ascend had insurance to help cover the cost of the repairs, the cost for fixing the vehicle was quite high — quoted at $11,000 to $16,000. This is because when the thieves cut off the converter, they did quite a bit of damage to the underside of the truck.
After hearing the news, the community rallied together.
“We were overwhelmed with the response to our misfortune. We had organizations that offered to lend us their vehicles and monetary donations from businesses and individuals. We were able to completely cover the cost of the repair and keep our services running smoothly,” said Deanna Genske, executive director. “We were also able to make some minor security upgrades including better lighting. It makes you feel good to know that when you are in need, good people step up to help. We are thankful to live and work in such a wonderful community.”
After countless hours reviewing the security camera footage, officials were not able to produce anything that would pinpoint the perpetrators.
