Notre Dame celebrates a 3-peat last March.
The Notre Dame Tritons girls basketball team is closing in on another Fox River Classic Conference championship. The Tritons defeated their nearest challenger Tuesday night, winning 82-47 at De Pere. Notre Dame made it 20 straight wins after opening the season with their only loss to Pewaukee. They are 16-0 in FRCC play, two games clear of the Redbirds with just two conference games to play. Senior Gracie Grzesk led a balanced attack with 24 points. Grzesk, headed to the University of Wisconsin next year, along with Trista Fayta, another Division 1 player and Sidney Whitehouse, could lay claim to being a part of the greatest class of high school basketball players, girls or boys, in Green Bay history. Consider, this trio has not lost a single conference game in their entire careers. Since they became instant starters in their freshman year, Notre Dame has gone 106-4, they’ve captured the FRCC title each season and they also have won three straight W.I.A.A. Division 2 State Basketball championships. They routinely put up 100 points in games, coming off a 122-6 victory at Sheboygan South last weekend. They’ve allowed opponents more than 40 points only 4 times this year. De Pere did it twice, as did Pewaukee in handing Notre Dame it’s only loss, and the top ranked Division 2 team in Illinois which the Tritons defeated in December. The girls are coached by Sarah Rhode who has five state titles to her credit but the unparalleled success of this senior class may have them go down in history.
Now Wisconsin history awaits. Notre Dame is one of six schools that share the WIAA record of winning three consecutive championships and now they have the opportunity to stand alone by standing atop the podium with a fourth straight gold ball at the Resch Center next month. They certainly look the part.
