MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Everyone was a winner in a race inside a Menasha grocery store.
North Shore Bank held its 15th annual Race for the Hungry at Piggly Wiggly Wednesday to benefit St. Joseph Food Program.
Two teams of pantry volunteers were given wish lists and rushed through the store, filling their carts with food for those struggling with hunger.
The first team to collect everything on the list won a $100 gift card, with the runner-up getting a $50 card. St. Joseph Food Program received $900 worth of food collected during the race, as well as a monetary donation from North Shore Bank.
Traci Junkins, St. Joseph Food program coordinator, says these events are so important to help meet the growing demand.
“The need is growing each day, we’ve seen our numbers increase every week for the last several weeks, if not, the last year, so the need for events like this, or donations in general, food or monetary donations on our website, is definitely a great need right now,” she said.
Junkins says the pantry serves more than 750 families a week and more than 5,000 individuals a week through its outreach services.
The pantry has a staff of just eight, so it heavily relies on volunteers and the generosity of the community.
