SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — What was feared to be a snowmobile going through the ice on Green Bay turned out to be just a piece of equipment, but the incident prompted sheriff’s officials to remind people of uncertain ice conditions during the recent stretch of warm weather.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office says just before 10 a.m., someone called to report a snowmobile falling through the ice near Longtail Point. The caller said the snowmobiler was yelling for help as the machine went into the water.
The sheriff’s office and Suamico firefighters sent an airboat, drone and medical services to the scene and began a search.
Deputies on the scene learned from two fishermen that a piece of equipment, described as a snowdog, was lost in the water. They confirmed that no one was in danger.
“When we get a call that something or someone has fallen in the ice, we take it seriously and we send all the resources we can until we figure out what happened,” said Capt. John Rousseau of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office. “Luckily today, nobody was injured, but we’re still going to treat that like it’s a rescue until we learn otherwise.”
Sheriff’s officials say those going onto the ice should be cautious when navigating the waterways, let someone know where they will be and always carry an emergency communication device.
Winnebago County sheriff’s officials also issued their own warning about ice. Their jurisdiction includes lakes Winnebago, Butte des Morts and Poygan, among other bodies of water.
