The Green Bay Phoenix men’s and women’s basketball teams are both having banner seasons and stayed atop the Horizon League standings with road victories Thursday night. The GB men ended a nine year drought at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio by finally getting over the Wright State Raiders 88-81. The leading scorer in the conference came through as Noah Reynolds poured in 30 points for the Phoenix to go along with 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Green Bay built their lead too 17 in the second half before Wright State came alive. Preston Ruedinger (18 points) and Foster Wonders (17), kept the Raiders at arms length by hitting big shots, Wonders knocked down 5 of Green Bay’s 15 three point baskets and the team was solid from the free throw line down the stretch to hold on. The Phoenix hit 15 of 28 from beyond the arc as they improved to 12-8 overall on the season and they now stand 7-2 in Horizon League play, sharing first place with Oakland. The men visit Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
The women’s team is on a dominating roll, easily dispatching Detroit Mercy Thursday night 75-48 for their 10th straight victory. Bailey Bulter led four players in double figures with 14 while Natalie McNeal added a dozen. GB stay perfect in conference play at 8-0, they are 15-3 overall. The Lady Phoenix will play at Oakland next on Saturday.
