GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Packers are no strangers to seeing the San Francisco 49ers in the postseason.
Fans are beaming with confidence, especially after Sunday’s win.
However, previous matchups with the 49ers in recent memory have not gone Green Bay’s way.
The 49ers were the last team to knock the Packers out of the postseason.
“They’ve had our number in the playoffs,” said Al Fenrich.
A blocked punt returned for a touchdown changed the momentum in the game, January of 2022.
Then-quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 225 yards. It was his final playoff game wearing the Green and Gold.
In the end, San Francisco beat Green Bay 13 to 10.
“Every single time it just, it hits you, just a sinking feeling, man,” said Logan Kreuger. “And you’re like ‘Man, are we ever going to just break that, that curse.”‘
Before Green Bay’s current postseason losing streak against the 49ers, there were iconic games that swayed in their favor.
One of those was their divisional round win on January 4, 1997.
That’s where Desmond Howard returned a punt 71 yards for a score.
“There was a lot of mud,” said Doug Cox. “I remember that one, that one was a great turnout for us.”
Green Bay’s last postseason victory over San Francisco was at Lambeau Field, in 2002.
It was the 2001 NFC wild card playoff game.
Since then, the Packers have lost four straight in the playoffs against the 49ers.
“Kaepernick was a big one, and then the Raheem Mostert game where they ran all over us,” said Fenrich.
In January of 2020, Mostert rushed for 220 yards and four touchdowns in a dominant win in the NFC Championship game.
San Francisco leads the all-time playoff series against Green Bay, winning five of the nine games they’ve played each other.
But after the Packers’ convincing win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, fans are confident and optimistic about the next contest.
“Jordan Love playing the way he is, it’s remarkable, the way he’s throwing the ball,” said Cox. “So, if they play like that and the defense holds up, you know, we’ve got a shot.”
“I think everybody’s gelling pretty well right now and I think they’re going to come out and play well together,” said Richard Zachow.
Saturday will mark an NFL record 10th time the two teams have battled in the playoffs.
Packers fans are ready to flip the script.
“I feel like we can break the curse,” said Kreuger. “Hey, love conquers all.”
“I’d be very worried if I was the 49ers that’s for sure,” said Fenrich.
