Joy Kirkpatrick, UW-Madison Division of Extension Farm Succession Outreach Specialist, discusses common barriers to planning for succession and provides first steps and resources for farm succession planning. Working on these first steps can save farmers time and money as they meet with service providers on their plans. Clearly describing the current farming operation and what the plan should accomplish can help farm owners and their successors with their own communications and communication with their service providers. Kirkpatrick provides a summary of what service providers would like businesses to bring to their meetings with them and the key factors to successful successions, according to the service professionals.
