GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The man arrested in connection with a west-side murder appeared in court Tuesday on an unrelated matter – and has not yet been charged for the death.
Owen Backus, 45, was in court for misdemeanor and disorderly conduct charges for an incident in October. No action was taken on that case.
In court Tuesday, the court commissioner noted Backus is scheduled to return to court Thursday in connection with a suspicious death Dec. 9 at a home on Western Avenue.
Backus was booked to the jail on a requested charge of first-degree reckless homicide. At a previous court hearing, District Attorney David Lasee noted there are self-defense claims in the case. Bond was set $1 million, and prosecutors were given until Thursday to decide what, if any, charges to file.
The identity of the 30-year-old victim has not been released.
