BAYFIELD, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) Two Lake Superior boaters and their dog are safe, after the Coast Guard rescued them from a distressed sailboat in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Bayfield. Guardsmen received a may-day call on Tuesday night from a 29-foot sailboat that took on water in windy conditions, and was in danger of being pushed aground at Sand Island.
One passenger fell overboard and swam to shore, but another sailor and a dog had to be removed from the boat with a rescue basket from a helicopter. The two human victims were taken to a hospital in Ashland, and they’re expected to be just fine. A Coast Guard statement did not identify the boaters.
