STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) – A 34-year-old man has struck a plea deal on charges of stabbing a Plover police officer who stopped him for erratic driving.
Brett Lieberman of Manawa pleaded guilty this week to reduced Portage County charges of reckless endangerment and second-offense drunk driving. A count of attempted homicide was dropped, and he’ll be sentenced January 15th.
The incident happened 14 months ago. Plover police officer Andrew Hopfensperger stopped Lieberman on Highway 54.
The motorist jumped out of his pickup truck and went after the officer with a knife. Hopfensperger then shot and wounded the defendant with his service weapon.
Lieberman was charged two months later with battery by a jail prisoner and strangulation and suffocation.
Online court records show that an initial appearance will continue on November 9th.
