MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A rally is planned before a special legislative session in the capitol.
On Thursday the Wisconsin legislature will meet for a special session to address gun violence in the state. The special session was set in an executive order signed by Governor Tony Evers on October 21st.
During the special session, several non-profits are holding a rally in support of stronger gun laws. The rally is titled We Are the 80%: Rally for Stronger Gun Laws and will begin at 1 p.m. outside the Capitol building at the State Street entrance.
The rally is being hosted by 9 different non-profit organizations. Those include March for Our Lives Wisconsin, Brady, End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin, Doctors for America, Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, 80% Coalition, Wisconsin Council of Churches, March for Our Lives Milwaukee, and Forward Latino.
A Facebook event is set up for the rally and says, “Despite the loss of hundreds of their constituents each and every year, Wisconsin’s state government has failed to pass legislation to protect Wisconsinites. It is time to pass commonsense measures that over 80% of the people in our state support, which is why we are glad Governor Evers has called a special session to address gun safety.
‘Come rally with us at 1 pm on November 7th to show the power 80% of Wisconsinites have in passing legislation that will save lives. By showing up, you will be reminding legislators to vote yes on background checks and ERPOs or risk losing their jobs!”
The rally is expected to be peaceful and won’t include items like signs on sticks, or noisemakers of any kind.
Republican leaders in the legislature have said they plan on gaveling out of the session moments after convening it. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he sees no need for hearings as Republicans oppose the proposed gun control bills.
