SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Work to treat spots of mold in the Shawano County Library is underway.
Mold was discovered in the main branch on South Sawyer Street in a closet, causing some damage and raising health concerns. Samples were taken from four rooms.
“The toxicologist’s review stated that only one of the mold species (Aspergillus/Penicillium) was observed in indoor spaces and not outdoors, which indicated that there may be former or active growth of that type of mold inside the building. He recommended that maintenance staff further inspect the property for potential areas of mold growth and that while mold spores can never totally be removed, that we work to reducing their presence in indoor spaces as these spore types can be allergens to sensitive persons,” said Library Director Nancy Bell.
As a result, treatment is underway.
“The county maintenance department has already been working on mitigating the mold issue by spot treating mold as needed, and dehumidifiers are being used to reduce the humidity levels in the building to discourage mold growth. I hope to have results from the new mold analysis sometime this week, which can then be compared to the 2017 report to help determine if mitigation efforts are working, or if further steps need to be taken,” Bell said.
