The Green Bay Phoenix Women’s basketball team, the pre-season choice to repeat as Horizon League champions, drew a tough non-conference opponent for it’s opening game, falling to Northern Iowa 78-67 on the road Monday night. The Panthers finished in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference a year ago. The Lady Phoenix came out strong, building a 25-15 lead in the second quarter, only to see UNI finish the half on a 23-8 run and they would not relinquish the lead after halftime. GB closed to within a point at 54-53 but Northern Iowa outscored the Phoenix 20-12 in the final period. It was a chilly start from three point range for Green Bay, making just 2 of 21 from beyond the arc including 18 straight misses. Nathalie McNeal led the Phoenix with 14, Jenna Guyer had 10 off the bench. Green Bay (0-1) will host Illinois State in it’s home opener Saturday at 12:00 PM at the Kress Center.
