APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — The Building for Kids Children’s Museum (BFKCM) is celebrating Native American Heritage Month in November with a week-long event, Celebrating Culture and Community Week.
From November 7 – 12, kids and their families are invited to come celebrate their own culture, explore informational texts, and experience local native stories and traditions.
“Through this week-long event, we hope to help amplify and celebrate the cultures of local first nations,” says Oliver Zornow, Executive Director of the BFKCM. “Through authentic partnerships and family-friendly activities, we hope to provide a safe and approachable space that fosters a deeper understanding of identity among participating families.”
With the support of a Wisconsin Humanities grant, the BFKCM is partnering with First Nations Outreach to curate a series of storytellers. Through daily storytimes, these local tribal members will share a variety of traditional stories to help explore the many aspects of indigenous culture and folklore in our area.
The BFKCM will also host PBS character, Molly of Denali, an Alaskan Native, for the event. Every day throughout the week, Molly will join visitors for programs based on the PBS show as well as an after-hours family night celebration.
In partnership with PBS Education, the week will also feature an educator resource night with a screening of the new PBS Documentary, Electa Quinney: Mohican Teacher and Mentor.
