KESHENA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The revitalization and renormalization of the Menomini language is at the center of a Keshena non-profit organization’s new community project.
Menomini yoU, Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to celebrate the start of construction for the Wqsecewan Language Campus.
This 10,000-square-foot building will serve as a local hub on the Menominee Indian Reservation, providing resources and education to support the revitalization of Omqnomenweqnaesen, the Menomini language.
Once completed, the campus will feature several classrooms, meeting and event rooms, office space, a kitchen and space for outdoor cultural activities.
“It’s going to be the default language used in this campus once we can get there. And that’s the goal our board set out for us. It’s the goal our leadership set out,” explained an event speaker. “We are going to operate every day in today’s world in our language because we can do it. We’ve done it before.”
Construction of the Wqsecewan Language Campus is expected to finish in July 2024.
Formally launched in June 2020, Menomini yoU’s mission is to dedicate time, effort and energy to the revitalization and renormalization of the Menomini language and lifeways.
