The Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team was a winner in the Head Coaching debut of Sundance “Sunny” Wicks Monday night at the Kress Center, beating St. Norbert College 65-63 in an exhibition game. The Division III Knights put up a fight, leading 31-26 at halftime. The Phoenix grabbed control of the game in the second half thanks to aggressive rebounding, pulling down 16 offensive boards, helping build an 11 point lead. St. Norbert got back into the game because of spotty free throw shooting. GB managed to make just 10 of 24 free throws and missed four straight in the closing seconds that would have put the game away. Clinging to a two point lead, GB missed both double bonus throws but rebounded the second miss with four seconds left. They missed two more giving the Knights a pretty good look at a game winning three that missed it’s mark at the horn. Garrett Grzesk led St. Norbert with 17 points. They’ll open their season next Wednesday, November 8, hosting Ripon. Noah Reynolds topped Green Bay with 15 points. The Sunny Wicks era officially begins when Green Bay travels to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones next Monday night.
