GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Green Bay Conservation Corps is hosting a volunteer event to celebrate National Make a Difference Day on Saturday.
The community is invited to help remove buckthorn and also plant other native plants from 9 a.m. to noon at Red Smith Park.
“Buckthorn is a shrub that produces berries but those berries provide very little nutritional value,” said Maria Otto, Green bay Conservation Crops Coordinator. “They take over the entire understory, so you can’t get any native flowers or native shrubs.”
National Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of community service. This annual event is held on the fourth Saturday of October, dating back to 1992.
Volunteers will meet at the park shelter before going into the wooded area.
Equipment and tools will be provided, but volunteers are reminded to dress appropriately by wearing gloves, closed toed shoes, and pants.
