MADISON, Wis. (WSAU-Wheeler News) — The U-W Board of Regents will consider a new tuition incentive plan that encourages more students to graduate in four years.
The Eau Claire campus wants the Regents to approve giving four-year grads a 25-percent break for classroom and online courses they take within five years of getting their initial diplomas. The Regents will consider the idea in committee meetings today, and a full board session tomorrow in Madison.
Eau Claire chancellor James Schmidt says students growing up during the Great Recession do too much to cover themselves, by pursuing multiple degrees they may not need. Some also delay their graduations by changing majors mid-stream.
Under the Eau Claire proposal, students would only have their freshman years to change majors. After that, they could step into related majors with an extra course. Schmidt says the plan could also reduce student debt after graduation.
