DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Temperatures have cooled and the color is approaching peak, so you may be planning a trip to see the changing leaves.
While there are many spots across the state to enjoy the seasonal scenery, one Northeast Wisconsin drive made a survey’s list of the best drives for fall foliage in the U.S.
The Door County Coastal Byway was listed third in Wisconsin and 120th in the nation in the survey of 3,000 drivers sponsored by Florida auto dealer Gunther VW Coconut Creek.
Here’s how the Door County route was described:
Spanning approximately 66 miles, this byway weaves its way along the shores of Lake Michigan and Green Bay, offering panoramic views of rocky bluffs, sandy beaches, and pristine waters. As autumn descends, the byway is transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors. The region’s dense forests, comprised mainly of maples, oaks, and cedars, burst into vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold. These stunning hues contrast with the deep blue waters, creating a picturesque setting that’s quintessentially Midwestern. Along the route, travelers will encounter quaint fishing villages, historic lighthouses, and artisanal shops, all reflecting Door County’s rich maritime heritage and cultural traditions.
