GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The administration of the Green Bay Area Public School District is recommending two more elementary schools be closed after this academic year. Also, the details of a referendum next year are expected to be discussed Monday.
The changes would be the latest steps as the district copes with shrinking enrollment and projected budget deficits, while a study committee recommended widespread changes across the district to reduce the number of buildings.
The board previously voted to close Wequiock Elementary at the end of this school year. At the meeting Monday, two more consolidations will be considered:
- To consolidate Tank Elementary School with Lincoln Elementary School for the 2024-25 school year.
- To consolidate Keller Elementary School with Kennedy Elementary School for the 2024-25 school year.
While one of the previous discussion topics was the possible closing of West High, the recommendation now is to include West in a boundary study examining school attendance areas.
“This recommendation is to allow for further exploration regarding potential school configurations, and to provide adequate time to determine how those changes would impact the International Baccalaureate Programme pathway,” according to a letter from the district.
District leadership will also present the board with an initial list of referendum projects, in anticipation of a vote next spring.
“Included in the list is a new westside elementary school for the purpose of consolidating MacArthur, Keller and Kennedy Elementary Schools,” the letter states.
Monday’s meeting is at 5:30 p.m. in the district office building, 200 S. Broadway, room 331.
