GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay’s parks committee gave a preliminary approval Wednesday evening for a grant to improve Joliet Park.
The park is along Nicolet Drive and the east shore of lower Green Bay.
The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded the city a $275,000 grant to hire a design firm for engineering work. The city council must formally vote to accept the grant.
The focus of the work would be shoreline habitat improvements and fish reef restoration.
City officials say after the design work is done; the city would pursue additional grants for construction.
Joe Morgan, the president for the Nicolet Drive Neighborhood Association, voiced some concerns at the meeting about work at the park.
“If you’re really concerned about natural habitat for the animals that are there, and this is the last green space, leave it alone,” said Morgan.
“I’m hopeful that this consultant (design firm) will bring the expertise and knowledge forward and help guide that discussion and try to bring unity to the neighborhood to find a general consensus of the approach moving forward,” said Dan Ditscheit, the city’s parks director.
The water habitat near Joliet Park is known for Walleye.
Adding trails and improving the parking lot are also possible, but not part of what the grant is paying for.
