DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The students, teachers and staff of Dickinson Elementary in De Pere are celebrating the completion of a new playground. The dedication of the new playground took place Sunday.
The new playground is replacing old equipment installed more than 30 years ago, which had aged to the point where it was beyond repair.
The new updated playground was custom-designed to meet the unique needs and wishes of the Dickinson Elementary students.
The school’s principal says this is a special day for the kids.
“It’s the best part of their day. As any parent knows, when you ask them how their day was, they’ll say good. And you’ll go what was good? Recess, right? ” said principal Luke Helache. “But all joking aside, play is very important for the social development and behavioral development of kids, and to build healthy and active lifestyles and routines.”
Fundraising efforts, including a read-a-thon involving students, corporate sponsorships and private donations raised more than 100,000 dollars to cover the project’s costs.
