GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach has vetoed the purchase of a former bank building for library parking – but the County Board could override it next week.
The County Board voted last month to purchase the former Bank Mutual property, 201 N. Monroe Ave, for $1.2 million. The deal was in part to provide parking for the Central Library but also to prevent the proposed development of a gas station, restaurant, and retail space. The vote was 18-3.
In his veto message, Streckenbach cited “additional costs.”
“Corporation Counsel has informed me that, during the County’s due diligence review of the Property, it was revealed that there will be additional costs which will require either a change in the appropriation amount, or a change in the terms and conditions of the contract, and that the current contract therefore does not have his approval,” he wrote.
The veto message does not specify what the additional costs are for, or how much more it would be to complete the sale.
The County Board meets Wednesday, when the agenda contemplates a closed session to discuss the issue and possibly vote to override the veto. A two-thirds vote would be required for an override.
