DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A local campus was buzzing with activity Thursday, as hundreds of freshmen students were moving in.
It’s also the first semester for the new president at St. Norbert College.
They hail from around the state, and places beyond the border. More than 500 first-year students are moving into the dormitories at St. Norbert College in De Pere. Alaina Schwahn is from Brillion.
“I’m pretty excited to get in there, and get everything set up, and new beginnings,” said Alaina Schwahn, St. Norbert College Student.
Alaina’s family is pitching in too. Her mother Kristie Schwahn says sending her daughter to college is bittersweet.
“It’s an emotional day, but we’re proud of our daughter, and really excited how her year will go, and what new adventures she’ll have,” said Kristie Schwahn, Brillion.
It’s also the first semester for Laurie Joyner. She took over as St. Norbert College’s ninth president in July. She welcomed some of those freshmen on Thursday.
“We’re going to focus on mission integration. Making sure that our Catholic liberal arts, and Norbertine mission get infused all across the college. The second thing, is student engagement, learning and success. The third thing is just striving for excellence in everything we do. Whether that’s academics, or athletics, or business operations. We just really want to always be about the process of continuous improvement,” said Laurie Joyner, St. Norbert College President.
Back inside the dorms, moving continues. Kristie Schwahn says some planning at home goes a long way.
“It’s organized chaos. But I feel like we started early enough that it’s feeling organized so far. So we’ll see how this goes once we get up there, and try to fit it in,” she said.
And with the couch delivered, her daughter Alaina says it already feels a little more like home.
“Pretty much go with the flow, and find everything its right place. Everything’s gone smoothly so far, so hopefully that continues,” she said.
Lots of activities are planned for the weekend, including a picnic, a concert, and fireworks on Sunday.
Students head to class on Monday.
