GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Area Public School District has a new superintendent this year and he has brought a new event for families with him.
The district’s ‘Welcome Back GBAPS Family Celebration 2023’ is being held today from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at West High School.
“When I first came on board I said to myself, how can we give back to the community,” said Dr. Claude Tiller Jr, the new superintendent. “How can we say thank you for bringing the kids to Green Bay Public Schools?”
With help from the district’s family engagement team, the new event was born. It will include food, carnival-style games, music, raffles, and more. It is all free.
“It’s a way to embrace the community and bring them together,” said Tiller. “Some people have been distant all summer long so now is the time to come back and rejoice for the start of the school year.”
The district is providing free shuttles from different locations throughout the city.
Tiller says there should be no barriers in getting to the event and parents FOX 11 spoke with say they appreciate the efforts.
“The poverty rate is high, so it would be a nice thing to get all the kids together, get them outside, get them to do things,” said Destiny Self, an Eisenhower Elementary School parent.
“With the economy the way that it is, it’s really nice that the schools in the city are doing something for the kids,” said Destiny Knutson, an Eisenhower Elementary School parent.
Kids also say it sounds like a good time.
“Games, fun, jokes, laughing, giggling,” said incoming Tank Elementary School 1st grader, Genevieve, of what she was most excited about for the celebration.
District officials say local businesses stepped up to help make the event possible. Raffle prizes will be given out every hour.
