APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A donation from an Appleton college is giving those in need a soft place to land.
Lawrence University donated 50 gently used mattresses to Pillars Inc., a nonprofit that helps the homeless.
The mattresses inside the residence halls at Lawrence University get replaced on a regular rotation.
Rather than getting rid of them, director of campus safety at Lawrence, Derek Diehl, says it’s better to give them to someone who may need it.
“Our mattresses are on scheduled rotations for replacement and could easily go in a landfill but if you just take a second and try to find somebody that might need a new mattress, they’re everywhere, it’s not just around the world but it’s in our own communities,” Diehl said.
Pillars says it is grateful for the donation. They will replace some residents’ mattresses at the adult family shelter and adult shelter.
“With this donation, the mattresses are extra large, twin-size mattresses, we typically just have regular twin-size so that means we’re going to rely on the community for more donations of twin extra large sized sheets and blankets and pillows,” community engagement director of Pillars, Matthew Malm explained.
The community can take a look at Pillars’ wishlist and make a donation.
