SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The giraffe exhibit at the NEW Zoo in Suamico is reaching new heights.
The zoo held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Lee & Kathy Anderson Giraffe Lodge Tuesday.
It features 3,640 square feet of indoor exercise space and additional hay storage that will allow the zoo to welcome more giraffes in the future.
NEW Zoo director, Carmen Murach, says giraffes need a lot of room.
“Giraffes are not good at cold weather so they do have to spend a portion of the year indoors and this will give them so much more space and be so nice for them,” she said.
The project was made possible by lead donors and longtime zoo volunteers, Lee and Kathy Anderson.
It’s the second expansion on the giraffe exhibit this year. The zoo redesigned the fencing within its indoor giraffe feeding experience to allow guests to get a bit closer to Nigel and Zuri the giraffes.
The giraffe lodge broke ground in December of 2022, along with a new snow leopard enclosure, which the zoo is still fundraising for.
