GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A Green Bay non-profit is working to bring a basic need to low income families.
For two years, Laundry Love with Helping Hands has been giving low-income families the opportunity to do their laundry for free during their events at Corner Coin Laundromat on Irwin Avenue in Green Bay.
Guests do their own laundry, while Laundry Love provides the soap, dryer sheets, and quarters to run the machines.
“We’ve had people come in and say that they really needed their medication, and they had no means to do their laundry because they had a medical bill or something they had to take care of,” said Director of Laundry Love with Helping Hands, Jean VandenLangenberg.
VandenLangenberg says they serve between 75-80 families each event, and go through approximately $5 thousand in quarters every month.
It costs up to $8.50 per load to wash your laundry, and 25 cents for 4 minutes in a dryer. “At minimum, we spend $2-3 on a dryer on a very small load” said VandenLangenberg. “We’re saving families probably $50 a visit when they come to the laundromat.”
Additionally, Laundry Love with Helping Hands holds one Senior Love event per month. Volunteers visit Fort Howard apartments, a low-income senior citizen apartment. At Fort Howard, volunteers also help with washing, drying, and folding laundry.
Laundry Love with Helping Hands is looking for volunteers, especially those who are bilingual and speak Spanish.
Laundry Love with Helping Hands has their next event on Monday, July 24 from 8-11 a.m. at Corner Coin Laundromat on Irwin Avenue in Green Bay.
