KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Plans for a new jail in Kewaunee County failed to secure funding Tuesday night, after bids came in $8 million over budget.
The county had planned to spend roughly $25 million on building a new jail, but bids came in at about $33 million, according to Chairman of the Kewaunee County Board of Supervisors Daniel Olson.
Olson said discussion about replacing the county’s 1968 jail has been ongoing for over 20 years. Almost exactly a year ago, the county board approved construction of a new jail.
But it all came down to funding when the board voted on Tuesday night. None of the options proposed to the board received the necessary support to pass.
Now, the jail study committee will need to meet again; Olson said they may further scale back the project or look at repairing the current facility.
