MANITOWOC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Manitowoc County has secured funding for its $30 million courthouse renovation project.
Last week, the county’s finance and public works committees recommended borrowing money to renovate the historic courthouse. That came after others argued the county should implement a sales tax to fund the project, as it is currently only one of four counties in the state without a county sales tax.
On Tuesday night, though, the county board chose to remain without a sales tax. Instead, the county will borrow the money by increasing the property taxes from 5% to 6%, or $25 to $30 per $100,000.
The project is expected to take three years to complete. The county estimates it will take about 20 to 25 years to pay off the borrowed money.
