BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) — The Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association is teaming up with the Wisconsin State Patrol for the “Troopers in a Truck” campaign.
The campaign is coming to Brown County on Thursday; An extra set of eyes looking down from the passenger seat of an 18-wheeler will watch over drivers.
Inspector Corey Dahl with the Wisconsin State Patrol says the goal of the campaign is to make the roads safer by having officers look for violations such as speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving, cell phone use, seat belt violations, and following too closely.
Once officers have located a driver making traffic violations, they will radio another nearby unit to make the enforcement stop.
“We usually participate in this detail for about four hours,” said Dahl. “Usually in the past, we’ve made contact with between 25-40 vehicles.”
In the last five years, Wisconsin has averaged 7,000 crashes with large trucks every year. In 2022, there were 73 deaths from crashes involving CMV’s in the state of Wisconsin.
Officials say although legal action may occur during the campaign, the main focus is education.
