WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Attention doctors: A caller posing as a sheriff’s deputy demanding payment for missing a court appearance is a scammer.
Winnebago County sheriff’s officials said they received four calls from pediatricians Monday reporting the fraudulent calls. The caller claims to be a Lt. Gruss — the name of an actual sheriff’s deputy — but the sheriff’s office says he is not the one calling.
Sheriff’s officials say they would never demand cash over the phone.
Other red flags of phone scams are demands to buy cash cards or drive to a kiosk to buy cards.
