GREENVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — State funding will help kickstart Appleton International Airport’s major concourse expansion project.
Governor Tony Evers took a tour of the airport Thursday after including $7 million for the project in the state budget.
“It’s really fascinating just for me for a history point of view how this airport has grown and the opportunities for the people in this part of the state to really continue to thrive, so I’m excited about that,” Gov. Evers said.
The $55-$56 million project includes adding more gates to accommodate additional and larger aircrafts and make restaurant, bathrooms and gift shop improvements.
Work on the project is expected to start in fall and the goal is to have it all done by 2025, just in time for when Green Bay hosts the NFL Draft.
“It’s a big deal for us to be able to continue our growth and development. Over the last five, six years, we’ve seen significant growth throughout all aspects of our airport and so we’re just really trying to catch up with our growth and build our infrastructure to support not only the growth but take us to that next level of airport,” said airport director Abe Weber.
Meanwhile, work continues on the airport’s $7.2 million hangar, funded by the 2022 CARES Act.
