It’s not always who you play, it’s when you play them. The Milwaukee Brewers kept the reeling New York Mets down by taking three out of the four games this week at Citi Field, winning the finale Thursday night 3-2 in nail biting fashion. New York struck first by striking two solo home runs in the third inning off Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo went deep, Nimmo’s third long ball of the series for an early 2-0. Max Scherezer shut out the Brewers for five innings until Victor Caratini tied it up with one swing, a two run shot, his fourth of the season. Houser ended up matching Scherzer nearly pitch for pitch, working 6 innings, giving up the two runs on 7 hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Scherzer had the same line but with 9 strikeouts. Against the New York pen, the Brewers loaded the bases in the top of the 7th and Brian Anderson hit a deep fly to right for a sacrifice fly and a 3-2 lead. Hoby Millner ran into trouble in the bottom half, loading the bases with a hit batsman but Elvis Peguero got out of the jam getting a double play ball turned brilliantly by Brice Turang just back up from Triple A Nashville. Joel Payamps had a clean 8th but Devin Williams got on the tightrope for the 9th. He gave up a single and walked a pair but struck out Starling Marte with the bases loaded for the final out and his 16th save of the year. The Brewers now stand 43-38 and move back into a tie for first in the NL Central with idle Cincinnati. Milwaukee wraps up it’s 10 game, 10 day road trip with a weekend in Pittsburgh. Freddy Peralta will work the series opener at PNC Park. Pre-game coverage begins at 5:30 PM with a 6:05 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
With President Joe Biden in town, traffic was snarled in the afternoon and the Brewer team bus got stuck, several players had to hop on a subway to get to Citi Field in time for the game. Turang took the roster spot of infielder Luis Urias who was sent down to Nashville.
