GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A ride once thought to be a thing of the past at Bay Beach Amusement Park made its triumphant return on Saturday.
In April, the city announced the Sea Dragon ride was too costly to repair and was being removed.
A few weeks later, the park’s fundraising group, the Friends of Bay Beach, purchased a replacement.
You might say it was a rollercoaster of emotions for the ride’s biggest fans.
“We rode the other one all the time, many times over the last few years, and when it failed we were pretty disappointed, but then read the Friends of Bay Beach got a replacement, we’re like wow that is cool,” said Troy Kowalski who had already rode the ride five times Saturday morning with his son Cameron.
The original Sea Dragon ride was installed in 2013 and city officials say it would have cost about $300,000 to repair.
City officials say the replacement ride is the same make, model, and year as the previous one.
Bay Beach maintenance staff now plans to shift focus to opening the replacement for the Bay Beast, which is a taller version of the previous ride.
