BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A campaign is returning to the streets of Brown County to raise awareness on pedestrian safety.
Partnering with law enforcement, volunteers from Wello, were out at various locations, encouraging drivers to “Yield to Your Neighbor” Thursday.
Volunteers, dressed in plain clothes, used the crosswalks, while officers monitored traffic.
If vehicles failed to yield to pedestrians, they were stopped and issued warnings and/or $155 tickets at the officer’s discretion.
Green Bay captain Clint Beguhn was stationed at the intersection of S. Webster and Eliza Street.
“It’s one of the common complaints we receive from the public is not being able to cross the street, not being able to feel safe, they’re worried about their kids. Just in the short time that we’ve been out here, we’ve actually been approached by some neighbors saying thank you and giving their accounts of what happened with their kids in trying to cross the crosswalk,” Beguhn said.
The law is that once a pedestrian enters the crosswalk, drivers must yield to them.
Beguhn says there are also a few things pedestrians can do to be safe in the crosswalk:
- Pedestrians should try to be visible to drivers
- Try to cross traffic at a reasonable place for traffic to stop like a crosswalk
- Pay attention, remove distractions like ear buds and do not look down at your cellphone while walking across traffic
In 2022, three Crosswalk Education and Enforcement events throughout Brown County resulted in 351 warnings issued and 1,298 vehicles correctly yielding to pedestrians resulting in a 79% compliance rate.
The next Frogger events will take place on Aug. 31 and Oct. 4.
