FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man suspected of domestic violence was arrested after allegedly setting fire to a residence and harming himself in Fond du Lac.
Around 1 p.m. Friday, police were called to the 400 block of E. 2nd Street for a report of domestic violence.
Upon arrival, officers found the 29-year-old victim was able to safely get out of the multi-family residence.
Officers learned the 31-year-old suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence with a can of gasoline.
Police evacuated the upstairs tenants of the residence and requested Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue to assist.
Officers set up a perimeter and tried to negotiate with the suspect to come out peacefully, however police say the suspect was uncooperative and hung up the phone multiple times.
During negotiations, flames could be seen on the first floor of the residence and smoke began coming out.
Police say the suspect briefly exited the residence with a severe self-inflicted wound to his throat, refused to cooperate and went back in the nearly fully engulfed residence.
Within moments the suspect re-exited the residence from a side door and was taken into custody.
The fire was quickly extinguished but not before it caused extensive damage.
The suspect was taken to the hospital with significant injuries and a Fond du Lac Police Department Community Service Officer who was assisting blocking off the street, was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Police say the suspect will face multiple charges and will be transported to the Fond du Lac County Jail after he is medically cleared.
