MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Over 81,000 Wisconsinites will soon be receiving checks from a $141 million settlement, after the company behind the TurboTax tax-filing program deceived customers who qualified for free tax services.
Attorney General Josh Kaul announced that Wisconsinites will be receiving over $2.45 million of the $141 settlement.
The multi-state settlement will have over 4.4 million people across America receiving checks this month.
The scam, which occurred from 2016-2018, had low-income Americans paying for tax services, despite qualifying for the IRS Free File Program.
Those who are eligible will receive an email, notifying them of the settlement. They will then receive a check in the mail without filing a claim.
Most people are expected to receive about $30, but that could vary depending on how many tax years they qualified for the free service.
Checks are expected to be sent out beginning next week.
