MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two students were arrested after bringing an unloaded gun onto school grounds at Roncalli Middle School.
School officials say parents reported the incident to the principal around 8:15 p.m. Thursday. A student saw two other students exchanging something in the parking lot of the school at 2109 Marshall St. The student thought what was being exchanged may have been a gun, but wasn’t sure.
School officials called in Manitowoc police to investigate. They confirmed that the unloaded gun was in fact brought onto the school grounds.
The students and their parents cooperated with police and turned over the gun.
Police don’t think there was any intention to cause harm to the school.
Officers are recommending the students be charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18 and possessing a firearm in a school zone.
“Roncalli Middle School administration has met with faculty, staff and students this morning to inform them of the situation,” John Stelzer, Roncalli Catholic Schools president, said in a news release. “In addition, counselors will be available throughout the day. Roncalli Catholic Schools continues to work to make the well-being of our students at the center of our mission. We thank God for our many blessings, and we ask for your prayers as we continue to work with our students and staff. We are grateful for the assistance of the Manitowoc Police Department.”
School officials say the students could be expelled.
