GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Green Bay elementary school student will now be able to enjoy recess like his peers, thanks to a tremendous amount of support from the community.
Hushe Lor is a Kennedy Elementary student with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder that is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.
Because Hushe must use a wheelchair to get around, it was difficult for him to have fun on the playground.
“It’s kind of hard to see him at recess, he just kind of sits in his wheelchair by the door, especially in the winter,” explained Cary Siegrist, a paraprofessional who works with Hushe at the school.
So students and staff decided to turn that around.
Earlier this year, the school started selling $1 bracelets to go toward the purchase of a vehicle for Hushe to use at recess. The bracelets also served as a way for students to bring awareness to Hushe’s condition.
Principal Trisha Smet proudly said they surpassed their goal of selling 400 bracelets and sold more than 800. They also received donations from the community and around the state.
On Monday, Hushe was able to take his new car for a test drive down the hallways as students cheered him on in a special parade.
“I had to hold back from crying, I was so happy that and to see the excitement on all the kids’ faces was unbelievable,” Siegrist said.
School officials say the new car will allow Hushe to go around the entire playground and help him be more social.
